Despite success in identifying equine Rotavirus B as a causative agent in foal illness, replication and propagation of the virus as needed for vaccine development have proven to be extremely difficult. Therefore, a different approach from the traditional one had to be undertaken.
Researchers developed a recombinant subunit vaccine containing a baculovirus-expressed Rotavirus B protein, chemically inactivated and adjuvanted. This same technology has been used to develop our other successful and efficacious products that we have created and licensed.
When administered to pregnant mares, the vaccine stimulates the immune system to generate a robust antibody response. These antibodies are then transferred to newborn foals via colostrum.
The USDA has approved our vaccine for sale in the state of Kentucky to licensed veterinarians on an experimental basis. Further licensure and nationwide distribution is anticipated in 2027.
